Melania Trump has resigned from her role as first lady and is under investigation for failing to report her husband, Donald Trump Jr., received $5,000 from a designer and $15,000 for a trip to a hotel in Russia, according to a letter obtained by The Washington Times.
The former first lady’s office confirmed the resignation to The Associated Press, saying in a statement that she will “work through the situation.”
Trump has been under fire since his daughter Ivanka Trump plagiarized her father’s work from the biography “How to Get Rich” and said he would have accepted money from Russians who tried to influence the 2016 election.
In his resignation letter, Trump wrote that she is “deeply sorry” and that she “wants to make amends to everyone involved.”
“The last thing I want is for my children to feel that I let them down, but I cannot change what I saw as a terrible and irresponsible decision,” she said.
The Associated Statesman newspaper first reported the letter.
The AP has not independently confirmed the allegations against Trump, who will be sworn in on Jan. 20.
The White House said Friday it did not comment on internal matters.
