LONDON — A former fashion designer who left a lucrative career to become an activist for a charity he had previously helped raise said Thursday he made more money selling the fashion he wore in his heyday.
Peter Firth, whose fashion brand, The Furs, made a splash in the 1990s by launching a line of fur coats, was paid more than $2 million by the fashion industry to speak at conferences and to make appearances at events.
He earned millions more to give speeches and to give interviews.
Firth, who now lives in London, told the Associated Press that he made a total of about $2,848,000 for the three years he worked on his memoirs.
The money came out of a business he had run, which is known as the Furs Foundation.
Firth said he was not compensated for the work he did and that his income was a result of the work of other people.
He said he had been paid about $1.5 million for his work and $500,000 to attend events.
Futh’s memoirs, called A Million Furs: A Memoir of My Fashion Journey and A Million Years: A Life of Fashion, will be released in June.
Futh wrote in an email that he does not want the book to be taken out of context.
He said he did not want to become the object of a book that was not about him, nor was it about his experiences as a fashion designer, nor did it reflect the views of the Fords.
“I am not the object or the subject of a piece of fiction, I am the subject and object of my own memoir,” he said.
Fume said he thought his memoir, written in 2007, was about fashion in the 1980s.
“I didn’t write it to be a story about my career or my career as a designer, I wrote it to write about the life I had before I went into the fashion business,” Fume said.
“This is my story.”
The Furs brand, based in London’s east end, was one of the first to sell clothing to high-end retailers such as Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, and to celebrities including Prince Harry, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt.
Fumes wife, Laura, a fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar, said she had never heard of him before.
“It’s shocking that he is in a position of power and he has been making money off his memoir,” Laura Fume told the AP.
Fushies book, which he said was written after his divorce from Laura Firth and his marriage to a fellow fashion designer and mother of two, will detail the financial hardships he faced as he struggled to make ends meet.
Fumes wife said she found the memoir hard to read because he had not given it much thought.
“He’s been through so much,” Laura said.
The Fears, which includes models, actresses, athletes and royalty, was founded in 1994.
Furs is known for a line that sold clothing and accessories from the 1980 to the 1990’s, including jackets, dresses, coats and shoes.
It was bought by fashion house Gucci, which sold it in 2002 to Gucci Fondation, and the company has since expanded into more than 30 countries.
Furs has also sold clothing in Japan, Hong Kong, China and Russia.
